Why ChatGPT doesn’t recommend your business (and what to fix first).

You have good clients, a solid reputation and a decent website, yet when you ask an AI assistant for a business like yours, it names your competitors. Here is why that usually happens.

First, check it properly

One question on one day is not a fair test. Ask three or four questions a real buyer would ask, in their words, including your town or region. Try them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. Write down who is named each time. If you are missing from most of them, read on.

Seven common reasons

In our audits these are the reasons that come up most often. Most businesses have two or three of them.

  • Your website never says plainly what you do. “Bespoke solutions for ambitious organisations” tells a machine nothing. “Commercial property solicitors in Stamford” does.
  • Your facts do not match. Your name, address, phone number or services differ between your site, Google Business Profile and directories, so tools are less sure who you are.
  • Nobody else talks about you. AI answers lean on independent sources: reviews, local press, trade bodies, partners. A great website on its own is rarely enough.
  • You do not answer buyer questions. If competitors publish clear pages on cost, process and who they work with, they give the assistant something to quote.
  • Your key pages are hard to read for crawlers: very slow, blocked in robots.txt, or built so the text only appears after heavy scripts run.
  • Your structured data is missing or wrong, so the tool has to guess your business type, location and services.
  • Your reviews are thin or old. Recent, detailed reviews from real clients help both people and machines.

What to fix first

Start with the things you fully control. Make your home page and main service pages state who you help, with what, and where, in the first two sentences. Make your business details identical everywhere. Then add one honest page for each question buyers ask before they call you.

After that, work on outside proof: ask happy clients for reviews, keep trade and directory listings current, and share useful knowledge where your buyers already read.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Not directly. Ad spend buys ad space; it does not change what an assistant says in its answer. The fixes above are what make a difference.

That is a business decision. If you block them, assistants have less of your own wording to rely on and may describe you from other sources instead.

No. Clear pages, consistent facts and good reviews are also what Google rewards, so the work usually helps both.

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Use the same questions each time so you can compare like with like.
