What is llms.txt, and does my business need one?
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a short plain-text file at the root of your website that lists your most important pages with one-line descriptions, so AI tools can find and understand them quickly. It is cheap to add and harmless, but there is no clear public evidence yet that major AI assistants rely on it.

How to write an llms.txt file
Start with a title and summary
Begin with your business name as a heading, then a one-paragraph summary: what you do, who for, where, and how to contact you.
List your key pages
Add sections such as Services, Prices, Locations and About, each with links to the right pages and a short, factual description.
Keep it factual
Use the same facts as your website and Google Business Profile. No slogans, no claims you cannot back up.
Publish it at the root
Save it as llms.txt at the top level of your site, for example yoursite.co.uk/llms.txt, and check it loads in a browser.
Keep it current
Update it whenever you add or remove an important page or change prices.
The honest limits
llms.txt was proposed in 2024 and is not an official web standard. AI companies have not, as far as public information goes, confirmed that their assistants use it to decide what to recommend. It does not replace a clear website, consistent business details or good reviews, and it is not a ranking factor in Google.
We add one for clients because it takes little time and gives a clean summary for any tool that does read it. You can see ours at trusted.media/llms.txt.
Where Trusted Media fits
llms.txt is a small part of AI search visibility. The bigger wins are clear service pages, consistent facts and independent mentions. Our SEO & AI Visibility Retainer starts from £750 a month +VAT, and the free Growth Audit includes a look at your AI search gaps.
AI search
Be the business the answer points to
Clear facts, plain answers and genuine reviews give AI assistants a reason to name you, and give buyers a reason to call.
What a good llms.txt looks like
A useful llms.txt is short and factual. It names the business, says what it does and where, gives contact details and lists the pages that explain services, prices and locations. It does not repeat marketing slogans or stuff in keywords. If a fact in the file is not on your website too, it should not be in the file.
